Commercial Fishing in New Zealand
Fishing Today
Fishing back in the days was easy and you didn't have to have any experience to get a meal for the family. You would be able to go to any beach and put a little net out or throw a line in the water and get a feed of fish for the family. This is because the commercial fishing business wasn't as big and didn't take a lot of fish.
Old Methods of fishing
...Surf casting of a beach with a bamboo rod...
...A small net put not far out then pulled back in...
...Fishing with a hand line of a wooden dingy...
...And later on a kite that pulls out a line with hooks on it and during that time a wind powered kontiki...
Some Rules
--When kontiki fishing you are only allowes to have 25 hooks or less on your main line.
--You must have a licence to be able to fish for trout.
--In some areas there are fishing seasons, you must abide by those regulations

Commercial Fishing in New Zealand
New Zealand’s commercial fishing sector has built up over the last 30 years. In the 1970s our fishing industry was largely an inshore affair. Offshore waters, beyond our 12 nautical mile Territorial Sea, were fished by Japanese, Taiwanese, Korean, and Soviet vessels. With the introduction of the 200 nautical mile exclusive economic zone in 1977 and the introduction of the quota management system in 1986, many New Zealand companies went on to invest in fishing vessels to fish the available catch and onshore factories to process the catch. The industry has also grown from being a predominantly domestic supplier to one of the nation’s leading export industries. In excess of 90 percent of all fish landed is exported.
Fishing Today
Today in some parts of New Zealand the fishing is very poor. For example Napier, a kontiki was put out three times in one day and the people caught one small Kahawai, that is hardly enough to feed an average family (two adults and two children). But in some places you can get heaps of fish in one day. For example Prongahau the Commercial trawlers don't fish that area so there are still lots of fish to be caught by recreational fisherman.
